Morrinsville Centennial Celebrations 2008

Morrinsville is the place to be in 2008 as the town kicks into top gear for its Centennial Celebrations.
Marking 100 years since Morrinsville officially became a town, the celebrations start in January 2008 and continue officially over four months, although there will be things happening for the whole year.

To date, the Centennial is to include a jazz festival, a three day floral festival, special A&P Show events and bicycle event. Other concepts are still in the pipeline and Butch Gifford from Morrinsville Information Centre is keen for the community to get in behind the celebrations.
“Obviously this is a one off event and we want to celebrate Morrinsville’s diversity in as many ways as we can,” he said.
“Anyone interested in becoming part of the Centennial or organising something in their area of interest is welcome to contact us. We are coordinating the event and the more input we receive, the better it will be.”
A Morrinsville Ball is to be an important part of the Centennial. Earmarked for April 12 at the Morrinsville Events Centre, It is a rare opportunity for farmers and rural Morrinsville people to trade their gumboots for dance shoes.
“We see this as a really crucial and fun part of the festivities. It’s the sort of thing that would have been a major draw card 100 years ago and it’s great to keep these old traditions alive, not the mention the chance to get dressed up and catch up with people from around the area,” said Mr. Johnston
Many farming families have a long history with the area. The Scott family of Scott Road celebrate their 100 years of  association with the town at the same time as the Centennial and are hosting their own family celebration.
“There’s lots of other people who have been a key part of shaping Morrinsville and we would love for them or their families to get involved,” said co-organisor Donna Morris.
“This is our chance to recognize people’s input and the growth of Morrinsville. The more groups, businesses and individuals who get involved, the more memorable it will be.”
Ideas are also being sought for a commemorative tribute. To date ideas put forward include a Centennial clock and many others. Supported by MPDC
“Once again, community input is everything. This is a celebration we want everyone to be part of. It’s a chance to be proud of Morrinsville, it’s growth and it’s future,” she said.
Anyone with Centennial suggestions is invited to contact Butch Gifford or Donna Morris at Morrinsville Information Centre (07) 889-5575.
